Calgary, Alberta
Lexbury is a private investment and holding company focused on acquiring well-run, cash-flowing small and medium-sized businesses. We are patient, direct, and serious buyers.
Investment Criteria
Lexbury acquires businesses with real earnings, real teams, and real futures. We are not a turnaround shop — we buy businesses that are already working and need the right partner to carry them forward.
Businesses with predictable revenue from returning customers — companies that start each new year with a clear picture of what they’ll earn, not a blank slate.
Teams with solid systems, policies, and procedures — where “that’s how we’ve always done it” is never the answer. Businesses that seek best practices even from outside their own industry.
Businesses with meaningful operations and management in Alberta. We invest in our own community — markets we understand, relationships we can build, and people we can genuinely connect with.
Established businesses with a proven track record — not a startup story. We invest in companies with demonstrated customer bases and staying power through economic cycles.
No single customer or supplier whose loss would create material risk. Revenue spread across multiple relationships, with a team that isn’t dependent on one key person.
Businesses that are easy to understand yet genuinely interesting — the kind where people say “wow, tell me more” when you explain what the company does. We invest in things that matter to real people.
How We Acquire
For many business owners, the thought of selling can be daunting. We designed our process to be direct, confidential, and straightforward — from first conversation to close, typically four to six months.
We conduct a preliminary valuation and investment assessment of your business using our proprietary MaxExit model. You'll receive a written report covering our scoring across five key value drivers: financial performance, business fundamentals, exit factors, management, and market position.
Week 1–2We share our report and walk through the findings with you directly. No intermediaries — this is a candid conversation about what the business looks like from a buyer's perspective, what's working, and where the value lies.
Week 2–3We meet to determine whether there's a genuine philosophical and personal fit. Acquisitions involve trust on both sides. We want to understand your goals for the business and your life after the transaction — not just the numbers.
Week 3–5We complete our formal due diligence — financial, operational, legal, and market. We aim to be thorough without being disruptive to your operations. You'll always know where we are in the process.
Month 2–4We work toward completing the transaction with clear terms and a structure that reflects the value of what you've built. Our goal is a clean close that leaves both parties satisfied and sets up the business for its next chapter.
Month 4–6A practical guide to understanding and improving your business’s exit value — covering financial performance, business fundamentals, exit readiness, management, and market position. Written by Mike Cook.
Our Focus
Alberta is one of the most underserved private business acquisition markets in the country — and one of the strongest. We're not here by default. This is where we've built our network, done our deals, and understand what businesses are actually worth.
Alberta produces businesses with real, durable cash flows — energy services, agriculture, industrial, and professional services that have weathered multiple cycles.
Alberta business owners built their businesses the hard way. That culture produces lean, well-run operations with minimal bureaucracy and strong margins.
A significant wave of small and medium business owners are approaching retirement. Many have no succession plan. We provide a direct, fair path to exit without a broker or auction process.
About Lexbury
Lexbury was founded by Mike Cook, a Calgary-based investor who has spent over two decades reviewing, assessing, and acquiring private businesses across Alberta. With more than 800 businesses reviewed, Mike brings a buyer's perspective that is direct, analytical, and grounded in real deal experience.
The name Lexbury is a fusion of “Lexi” and “Ruby” — the names of Mike and his wife Stacie’s two daughters (unfortunately, their son “Sam” wasn’t yet born when they came up with the name). It wasn’t chosen by accident. It’s a daily reminder that business is personal, and that every deal should be conducted on the same premises Mike holds in his own life: trust, integrity, and respect.
Lexbury is an investment, management, and holding company — not a brokerage, not a consulting firm, and not a fund looking to flip assets. When we acquire a business, we take long-term ownership seriously. We invest in businesses whose vision and team we can stand behind.
Our portfolio consists only of companies that fit our criteria and our values. That selectivity is intentional. We'd rather do fewer deals well than many deals indifferently.
We work directly with business owners — without intermediaries — because we believe that's how the best transactions happen. Honest conversations, fair valuations, and a process that respects what you've built.
Most business owners have never sold a business before. They don't know what it's worth, they don't know what buyers actually look for, and they don't know who to trust. My goal is to change that — one direct conversation at a time.
Our Approach
How we think about buying businesses shapes how we treat the people who built them.
We are not a private equity firm with a 5-year exit mandate. When we acquire a business, we plan to hold it. That changes how we evaluate, how we negotiate, and how we treat the team that comes with it.
We use a rigorous, scored assessment model to determine what a business is worth. We share our analysis with sellers openly. No games, no lowballs followed by re-trades. The number we offer is the number we mean.
We've reviewed over 800 businesses. We know what it takes to build one. Our process is designed to be respectful of that — your time, your confidentiality, and your legacy.
We don't parachute in to reorganize everything. We look for businesses that are already running well and bring capital, oversight, and strategic support — not disruption.
You don't need a business broker to sell to Lexbury. Our process is designed for direct owner-to-buyer transactions. That saves time, preserves confidentiality, and reduces cost for you.
We review hundreds of businesses and acquire very few. That selectivity means that when we move forward, we are genuinely committed. Our interest in your business is real.
The Golden Rule
“With every successful business we’ve encountered or invested in, we’ve noticed that the philosophy of the Golden Rule permeated the organization — treating people the way you want to be treated. Whether through an owner asking an employee about a personal matter, or a receptionist who genuinely cares about a guest’s needs. Care, respect, and empathy cannot be faked.”
This is the foundation of Lexbury’s investment philosophy.
For Accredited Investors
The Alberta small business sector forms the backbone of the Alberta economy — employing more Albertans than the province’s largest companies combined. Yet it has historically been one of the most difficult segments for outside capital to access.
Lexbury's Private Business Investment Partnership offers accredited investors a disciplined pathway into this asset class — through acquisition-oriented deals with experienced local operators, rigorous due diligence, and a long-term hold approach.
We work with a select group of accredited investors who share our values around patient capital, direct ownership, and long-term value creation. If you're interested in learning more about our current investment opportunities, reach out directly.
Initial conversations are confidential and carry no obligation. We'll share our deal philosophy, current pipeline, and how a partnership could be structured.
